Ursodeoxycholic acid
Indications/Uses
Dissolution of cholesterol-rich gallstones in patients w/ functioning gallbladders. Primary biliary cirrhosis.
Dosage/Direction for Use
Administration
Should be taken with food.
Contraindications
Hypersensitivity. Patients w/ complete obstruction of biliary tract, fulminant hepatitis, radiopaque calcifying cholelithiasis, nonfunctioning gallbladder or acute cholecystitis, renal disease, acute gastroduodenal ulcers, colitis or enteritis (eg, Crohn's disease). Pregnancy. Childn.
Special Precautions
Peptic ulcer, inflammatory bowel or chronic liver disease. Jaundice, hepatic cirrhosis. Regularly check liver enzyme levels (ALT, AST, γ-GT, ALP, total bilirubin); perform liver function test. Severe pancreatic disease; choledocholithiasis; variceal bleeding, hepatic encephalopathy, ascites & those in need of urgent liver transplantation. Avoid in pregnancy. Women of childbearing potential. Elderly.
Adverse Reactions
Diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, heartburn, epigastric discomfort; itchiness, rashes; fever, cough, dyspnea. Rarely, general malaise, dizziness, calcification of cholelithiasis, increase in ALT, ALP, AST, γ-GT, decrease in leukocyte. Increased serum bilirubin.
Drug Interactions
May increase effect of oral hypoglycemics. Reduced absorption w/ cholestyramine, cholestipol, charcoal, Al & Mg-based antacids, OCs containing estrogen, clofibrate & drugs which induce liver injury.
